Here’s my mood lighting choice: None.
I appreciate having a little color matched lighting when I want to see things, such as my cupholders at night, or looking into a footwell to see what the pedal is snagged on, or seeing where the barrel plug is at night... but really I don’t need anything other than that.
Just let me dim my dash as dark as I want to go. I don’t need a thousand bright lights in my car. All I need lit are my important gauges and the road in front of me.

Well the first time I came across customisable mood (ambie nce) lighting was on a Mini Cooper with Chilli Pack about ten years ago.
It had two LEDs on the roof either side of the rear view mirror and one up-light on each B pillar.

Youth here. My ‘96 Golf has mood lighting that turns on with the headlights- it’s a red glow in the footwells. Hate it. It’s stupid and I can’t turn it off. VW should make a car that’s, I dunno, fun to drive?

probably not, but most of the competition has it by now so they pretty much have to...

Yes. Yes they do.

Of course, I have a younger brother who put mood lights in his Astro when he was like 23, but also being an EE he put a set of control pots for them on the seat, so I don’t really know anything.

Of course it will! Do you not know of the very successful phone case industry?

Storytime: I’m very much like you, or I used to be, anyway. Then, 10+ years ago, I got LASIK done for my nearsightedness. I still have 20/15 vision today and would do it again in a heartbeat, but have had to deal with larger halos when driving at night, especially when tired or when my eyes are dry. At one point several years ago, it got to the point where I really needed to do something about it to feel safe driving when it was dark out. I talked to my eye doctor, no real solution there, so I started doing lots of reading. I found others with similar issues and happened upon a very interesting solution: more light in the cabin actually makes these halos smaller. With nearly no light in the cabin, your irises expand to maximize your pupil size, and this has a direct bearing on the size of the halos. I’ve found that, when driving at night and having issues with halos, if I turn on the map light and dial up the brightness on the dash, the halos almost immediately shrink to a much more acceptable size.

I used to drive at night quite often. Eventually my eyes naturally calibrated themselves to withstand getting blinded by a brodozer or brand new Escalade a bit better, but I could get away with using a dimmed dash (I generally run about 50%, which is a comfortable setting in most situations.)

I actually think it’s kinda fun. Most cars now are cheap appliances - you need to differentiate and make your product “fun” - quick customization is what will be needed. The next evolution is customizable dash clusters in cheap cars.

Wow, good to know! Not getting lasik anytime soon, but still, good info to have!

I don’t get mood lighting. Like I’m supposed to change it based on how I feel or want to feel? I’d just keep it pink all the time.

I mean, it’s kind of a “why not” feature, that’s fine, but using it as the foundation of your ad campaign?

MB has been doing this for some time, and nothing says youth* like MB

With 95% of Oppo? No. With 95% of the general public? Probably yes.
A dude in my town got more compliments on the puddle lights and interior led lights than the expensive wrap on his E90.

The thing is... ambient lighting is a cool gimmick... but it isn’t enough on it’s own.
It should be in combination with a new movement in automotive interior design... that happens to incorporate multicolor, variable mood lighting.
A single detail does not a new aesthetic make.
New-think. Not the same thing over and over again... Plenty of sameness in most automotive design lately, inside and out.

Roof console... see, and raise...
McLaren Senna. Full on Race Car, and yes, that is the engine start and stop button, on the ROOF console. And I want to say that the silver levers are the overhead door releases... and the window switches are up there, too.
Seat-mounted transmission console.
Arguably the spartan interior is more beautiful and innovative than the exterior.
I hope that interior becomes an option on revisions of the 720S... maybe the transparent door cards, too...
Maybe the minimalist interior is an idea for VW’s XL1 Mark 2... the search for more sales...

Whoaaa I really need to try that. I have awful halos driving at night, especially in the rain. It’s only been getting worse with the increasing average height of vehicles on the road, and all the awful super bright headlights. I wear contacts, -5.50 in both eyes, and my optometrist basically said “yeah that’s just how it goes when you’re really nearsighted”
I’ve totally gotta try fiddling with my interior lights.

My Ford has this and it is a few years old. I think they’ve been doing it for a while.

I wonder how the marketing department pitched this to get the commercial approved.
Theyoooth......*dramatic pause*....love laiiiits!
And we want to sell just that in a 3 minute commercial.
*Uproarious executive applause *

It’s not that they have the feature, it’s that they’re making such a big deal about it in these commercials.
